What is a dental crown?

Designed to cover your teeth like caps, dental crowns in Nutley, NJ  are ideal for a tooth that has had most of its structure compromised.

Breakdown of your tooth can happen due to trauma or an accident, or because of the loss of an old restoration. It can result from tooth decay that has progressed beyond what a dental filling is capable of repairing. Often a dental crown is used to cover a weakened tooth following a failed root canal.

A crown closely mimics your natural tooth in both shape and shade, and it fits over your remaining natural tooth structure, protecting your root. The good news is that your new tooth functions just like your natural tooth, and it will complement your smile because it is designed to match your surrounding teeth.

Why do I need a dental crown instead of a filling?

Generally, a root canal is closed with a filling, but if your tooth structure has been compromised and is vulnerable to breakage, a dental crown is the best option. A crown saves your tooth and blends in seamlessly with other teeth.

Our patients rave about our beautiful dental crowns in Nutley, NJ because they look exactly like their natural teeth and restore bite.

Can a dental crown hide my tooth flaws?

Because a dental crown is shaped like a tooth and fits over an existing tooth to the gum line, you can opt for a dental crown to camouflage a variety of tooth issues including:

  • Nonspecific flaws
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Small cracks and imperfections
  • Stains
  • An unusually shaped tooth

How do I care for my dental crown?

A dental crown cannot decay, but it’s important to brush and floss regularly to avoid gum disease or infections that can compromise your remaining tooth structure.

It is also important to visit our Nutley, NJ dental office regularly for cleanings and exams.

The American dental association recommends twice-yearly exams, periodic x-rays, and dental cleanings every six months. If you have specific dental issues or are predisposed to cavities, Dr. Richard Tom will provide a custom treatment schedule to keep your teeth healthy and your crown in good order.

What is a dental bridge?

If you are missing one or more adjacent teeth, dental bridges in Nutley, NJ may be an excellent option to restore your smile.Dental bridge Diagram | Nutley NJ Dentist

Using dental crowns as anchors, a bridge has prosthetic teeth in between these crowns to fill in the open space. The crowns are placed over adjacent teeth to keep your bridge secure. Your bridge restores the function of chewing that is often lost when teeth are missing, and a dental bridge provides aesthetics by filling in your smile.

How do I take care of my dental bridge?

The key to ensuring the longevity of a dental bridge is keeping your anchor teeth clean and healthy with consistent brushing and regular dental checkups with our dentist in Nutley, NJ. If your anchor teeth become weak or you develop a gum infection, these issues will compromise the stability of your bridge and can even lead to further tooth loss.

Our dentist will recommend special floss and the right type of toothbrush to clean your dental bridge.

What is the difference between a bridge and a partial denture?

While a dental bridge and a partial denture fill in for missing teeth, a dental bridge is affixed and not removable.

A partial denture can be removed for cleaning or while sleeping.

A dental bridge is a more practical solution because the fit does not change as your jawbone retracts. When teeth are missing, jawbones shrink away causing dentures and partials not to fit as well as they once did.

What is a dental implant-supported bridged?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are implanted in your jaw. A dental implant post can help secure a bridge if adjacent teeth are not as strong as they could be or simply to provide added assurance.

Unlike a bridge alone, a dental implant-supported bridge prevents bone loss in the jaw because it behaves like a natural tooth root. Natural tooth roots stimulate your jawbone and keep it healthy.

Dental insurance plans vary by patient, but our trained staff is always happy to file claims on your behalf. You can also speak to someone at your insurance company about the possibility of coverage.

At RT Dental, we have partnered with CareCredit to help patients get the care they need. The health credit card allows you to have medical and dental work and comes with a reasonable repayment plan—often without interest! It takes only a few minutes to qualify for CareCredit.

If I have a missing or damaged tooth, what happens if I delay treatment?

If you need a tooth repaired with a crown or replaced with a bridge, it is crucial to address these issues as soon as possible. A tooth suffering from trauma or decay can cause discomfort, and an infection can result if the tooth is left untreated.

If tooth replacement is needed, it’s important to understand the consequences of delaying treatment. Your surrounding teeth will begin to move and shift if you don’t replace your missing tooth.

A dental bridge or crown will protect your oral health and the integrity of your smile.

Why should I choose RT Dental to provide my crowns and bridges?

When it comes to quality crowns and bridges and excellent dentistry, we believe Dr. Richard Tom is the best dentist in Nutley, NJ. Our patients have raved about their dental work, and we’re confident that you’ll be just as enthusiastic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your tooth is decayed, and your dentist diagnosed a dental crown. In the past, a filling has been sufficient, so you wonder why you need a crown now?

A crown is the best choice when your tooth is decayed, broken, or cracked beyond what a filling is capable of repairing. A filling is designed to fix a small hole that is left by tooth decay. If the decay has compromised more than half of your tooth structure, a filling will no longer be able to support your tooth properly.

Dental crowns cover your tooth and restore the entire structure. They’re designed to closely mimic your tooth, so they provide all the function and aesthetics you had before while also protecting your natural root.

Crowns are also used as the restoration for a single implant, which replaces a missing tooth. A tooth that has been treated with root canal therapy will also need a dental crown to strengthen it. So there are many circumstances when Dr. Richard Tom may utilize a dental crown to restore your oral health.

If you have a tooth that needs a crown to restore the damage left by decay, it’s best not to delay your treatment as the decay can progress and result in a painful infection in your tooth.
