At RT Dental, our goal is to help you maintain your natural teeth for a lifetime. But sometimes a tooth extraction may be necessary to protect your oral health. If you need a tooth removed, Dr. Richard Tom can help, and you’ll find that your team at RT Dental goes the extra mile to make your procedure as comfortable as possible.
Why Do I Need a Tooth Extracted?
When a tooth suffers from trauma, decay, injury, or a fracture that reaches the nerve and causes an infection, sometimes it cannot be saved with root canal therapy. We remove the tooth to protect the health of other surrounding teeth. An infection that is left untreated and could progress to other areas and result in additional tooth loss.
In some cases, if teeth are severely crowded, extractions may be recommended before having orthodontic treatment. Removing teeth can often make orthodontic treatment more efficient and effective if teeth are overcrowded.
Also known as third molars, wisdom teeth are the last of the molars to arrive way back in your mouth behind your second set of molars. Wisdom teeth typically come in around the age of 16 to 23 years.
We recommend extracting wisdom teeth for a few different reasons such as:
- There is usually not enough space in the mouth to accommodate them, and they could begin to crowd other teeth.
- Their location at the back of the mouth makes them difficult to brush and floss properly and could increase your risk of developing gum disease or tooth decay.
- Sometimes they arrive at odd angles that could affect neighboring teeth.
- Some wisdom teeth are impacted or trapped underneath the gum line and are at risk of causing an infection.
Wisdom teeth extractions are very common, and your Nutley dentist is happy to help you determine if removing them will best suit your needs.
